Maraton on TreadMill

Many of you know Dr. Rajat Chauhan. He is the head of sports medicine department of Manipal hospital and quite popular amongst the runners. He recently tested a new treadmill the hospital bought by running a full marathon on it..

Here is his email on the experience.. makes an interesting read..

(Disclaimer: This is not Sports & Exercise Medicine doctor writing but a crazy runner... a damn crazy runner. Please do not try this at home, kids please keep a watch on your parents)

It's been a while since I "RAN".
I got up at 3:45 am on Thursday (21st) morning and was just craving for RUNNING. I just had way to much going on in my head to sleep. I decided to test drive the HPCosmos treadmill at the Sports & Exercise Medicine department at Manipal Hospital, that costs as much as Honda Accord. Wanted to check out for myself if it was as good as the Accord.
I had only run 4-5 times since the Bangalore ultra marathon, of which Tuesday (19th) and Wednesday (20th) were two of them. I have the Rajasthan desert run coming up, where the plan is to run a marathon or more every day for 5 consecutive days. So, needed some training.
One thing I learnt the real hard way was, that training is "over-rated". The only time I had a chance to come first in a marathon, was ruined by a 62 year old running mate. Last time he had run was 6 months before that, as he was nursing an "achilles tendenitis". I was running with him for first 21 km, and then decided he was too slow for me and I carried on. The guy caught up with me at 40 km mark and kicked my butt / ass / arse (take your pick) really bad. I did that particular marathon in 2 hrs 58 min and he did that in 2 hrs 54 min (his personal best). What really got this chap through was his experience of having run more than 200 marathons and rest (experience and recovery).
Back to the treadmill run. Now, the catch was, the department opens at 6 am. I was in my running gear by 4 am and was raring to go.
I finally reached the department by 6:30 am along with my water bottle and 2 Power bars. The plan was to ... hmmm ... RUN I guess. Basically, had nothing planned. Initial running speed was 14 kmph and I was trying to do a quick 5km, which grew to 10 km but then decided to slow down so I could comfortably do more, if I felt like. It was a bit of a struggle for first 40ish minutes, but at sharp 7:13 am, Kieran asked me how I felt. I said, "no legs". He thought I was dying that I couldn't feel my legs. In "Every Second Counts", Lance Armstrong uses a phrase "no chain" when he is going very quick but feels very comfortable. So for me it was "no legs".
At this stage I was cruising at 12-13 kmph. It might seem very slow but I had never run more than 30 min in total on treadmill, all put together, in my life. And I hate treadmills!
By now the plan was to do 20 km, which turned to 30 km. In this time, I had attended to 2 patient's conditions and 1 department issue and also applied some tape on my left bleeding nipple. I had 3 water stops. At times I had increased the speed to 17 kmph but most of the times it was 11 kmph.
After having got to 30 km, it just made no sense to stop there, as only 12 km more would complete the marathon distance. The best part was, I got the sms I was waiting for at around 30 km mark! I couldn't wait, sitting doing nothing. I just felt awesome.
By 40th km, Pariksha (nutritionist) had come, and I asked her to check out my Heart Rate. So, I picked up the speed again to 17-18 kmph and my heart rate touched 200 bpm. According to the formulas given on "Internet" for "Maximum Heart Rate", I had just turned 20 years. I could have reduced it to 15 yrs, but Pariksha advised me to take it easy.
After having turned 20, I had reached the 42.2 km in 3 hrs 40 min. I could have carried on for another 30ish km, but decided to stop. Slow for a marathon, but ok for a run after such a long time.
All systems are ready to go for the Rajasthan desert run and some surprise runs planned over next 2 months. It's cool to find "surprise" & "planned" in the same line.
Keep smiling & miling.

Weight loss and Running

Most of us plunge into running or plan to take up running aiming to lose weight or to lead a healthy lifestyle. Over a period of time, running would have become our passion and we start thinking about breaking our personal records, completing marathons, buying running gears, apparels and the list keeps increasing. As we keep adding miles to our kitty, the primary goal of losing weight would have taken a back seat. We also find the weighing scale showing a constant reading or more irrespective of the miles we are covering per week. Unknowingly we would have developed the habit of consuming more food (or calories) than our basic daily energy needs, rewarding our body for the tiring long runs.

If the above points reflect your story, try to follow some simple tips and achieve your primary goal.

Maintain a food journal: Just like you maintain a journal for tracking weekly mileage, maintain a journal for tracking your food intake. This will at least help us in knowing whether we are eating less or more.

The following calculation would give you an approximate energy requirements per day. Before taking a plunge I would suggest you to do some research and proceed further.

Approximate Calories required per day = Body weight in lbs (or Body weight in Kgs x 2.2) x 13.

If you weigh 75kgs, your daily requirement would be 75 x 2.2 x 13 = 2145 calories per day. To lose 1lb or .455kgs our calorie intake should go on a deficit of 3500 calories. Spread this over 7 days, end of 1st week you would have lost 1lb. There are many websites dedicated for weight loss which can be helpful for your specific needs.

You can find calorie charts for indian food items here and here.

A snap shot of my food journal.

Off season diet: While we are training for a marathon, it becomes difficult to reduce the carb intake. But during the off season, try to eat primarily wheat based foods, many fruits and go less on rice based foods. We usually tend to count chapattis or rotis, but we don’t measure rice, so that makes a difference.

While carbohydrate loading does appear to be effective for most runners, it does have its drawbacks. Consuming too many calories in the name of carbohydrate loading can add extra body weight, which will increase the energy demands of running a marathon. Also, for every gram of glycogen stored, almost 3 grams of water are stored with it. This can leave a runner with a bloated or heavy feeling. Think for a moment before you binge on pongal and vadas.

Weight Training: Most of the road runners hate to hit the gym and do weight training. If you are a runner then dont ignore weights.
The following are some of the benefits of weight training (source : http://www.marathontraining.com/marathon/m_wt.html )

Upper Body - A strong upper body helps minimizes fatigue and stiffness in the arms, shoulders, and neck areas that in turn, enables a runner to maintain form late in a marathon or long run. Legs move only as fast as the arms swing. The runner with a strong upper body will find more power for the sprint to the finish line, an easier crank up a hill, and better balance when running on trails. In short, all of these add up to an ability to run faster and more efficiently.

Legs - Running creates a slight muscular imbalance in the legs as the hamstrings and calf muscles develop at a faster rate than the quadriceps and shins. Weight training helps address this imbalance. Additionally, strong quads and hips help protect these areas from a variety of injuries. Strong legs also offer protection from the possibility of injury when running at a fast pace downhill.

Abdominals - A strong abdominal region helps protect the back while at the same time, assists in maintaining proper running form and posture.

I followed these basic points and lost 4kgs since the Singapore marathon December 07.
Enjoy running, know what you are eating, lose weight and have fun.

Before concluding just have a feel of how a 5lbs fat (Gluey yellow colored thing) and 5lbs of muscle would look like.

Look at the road block/s & crowd support.. I dream of running that kind of a marathon in Chennai some day.. !!! will it happen in my lifetime?

Dear Runners,

We've had more than a dozen new member registrations since the last two days. We'd like to take this opportunity to welcome all our new members!

  • As a team we participated in our first international marathon @ Standard Chartered Singapore Marathon in 2007.
  • We successfully conducted five 30 kilometer (about 18.5miles) ECR Runs!
  • Participated as a team in the Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon held in January 2008.
  • A team participation at the Hero Ultra Chennai Marathon held on 10th February 2008.
  • Covered by the media in more than an occasion - The Hindu, India Today, Deccan Chronicle, Mylapore Times, to mention a few.
We believe in the fact that Running is all about Having Fun! Thats our mantra. We just hope that our new members will derive benefit from joining us. We invite our new members to mail and introduce yourselves to the team, and we look forward to running with you in the days to come.

Chennai Marathon 2008 - A Report

Dear Readers,
We've observed a lot of comments on this article recently. This article is on the Hero Ultra Chennai Marathon that was held in Feb 2008. This is NOT the Marg Chennai Marathon!
The pictures of the Marg Chennai Marathon can be found at http://photos.chennairunners.com

Thanks,
Karthik

Chennai Marathon did finally happen and here are some photos from that forgettable event..

Chennai Runners at the starting point..
About 18 from our group participated including Mrs. Mahesh who I saw about a km from the finish line walking but determined to finish..

Registration was still open before the starting time.. people were milling around to get the bib and TShirt
Registration was still open few minutes to the start of the run.. People were milling around to register and get their bibs and TShirts.

Hero Ultra was the main sponsor of the event..
Hero Ulta, electric scooter makers were the main sponsor for the event. These guys were cruising around without helmets and were quiet a hindrance to the runners.

Minister & Mayor about to flag of the full marathon
Sports Minister of Tamil Nadu & Mayor of Chennai about to flag off the marathon.....

Chennai Marathon - Full Marathon starting point
Less than 50 runners participated in the full marathon.. not sure how many completed. Abhijit, Vittal & Venkatesh from our group were at the starting line.

Run Tomorrow - Chennai Marathon

Believe IT.. Chennai Marathon is happening tomorrow (Feb 10, 2008). No information is available about the start location, time, route etc,, but don't despair the organizers have time till tomorrow to sort it out. They have organized a marathon in 5 days.. and wouldn't need more than just 5 minutes to sort out minor details like route, start time, information dissemination etc.,

But.. we Chennai Runners won't let our city down.... we will participate and will do so in numbers. We might not know the definitive start time and location but will assemble near Anna Square @ 6:00 AM. Thanks to Karthik, I took care of my registration without much hassle and I suggest you guys do the same. Depending on who you encounter at the registration desk, might be asked for medical certificate etc.,

So friends, our scheduled run tomorrow will be the 'Chennai Marathon'.. keep your fingers crossed.. and camera ready..
