Republic Day Run at Alwarpet - Post Run Report

Hi All,

You all know today we are celebrating our 61st Republic Day and we
were Seven of us at the C P Ramasamy Road.

1.Ram Viswanathan
2.Karthik Padmanabhan
3.Senthilanand
4.Bharani Shivakumar (He had already done 8.5 kms and he joined us)
5.KK
6.Aparna (Our guest for the Republic Day Run from Bangalore)
7.Shankar Lal M Patel (This was my first run after SCMM 2010)

I reached the start point at about 5:12am and then we decided the
route to be Boat Club, Kotturpuram Road, enter IIT through Exit Gate
(that's a secret shared by Ram) run till Gajendra Circle and run back
to start point.

We started the run at about 5:19am and the lead runner was Bharani
and lead group was Ram, Karthik and Senthilanand. I was running alone
and following me were KK and Aparna. We did the boat club loop and at
the end of the loop I felt mild cramp on the right calf ( I did not
stretch properly before run) and stopped running and stretched that
part and in the meanwhile KK and Aparna had overtaken me. I slowly
build up pace and joined them before the new flyover.

I asked Aparna how long she has been running and she replied she
runs 8-9 kms or run on treadmill for the past three years. I asked her
this question as she was running effortlessly.

We reached the exit gate of IIT and was closed and went ahead to
enter through the Main Gate. We saw Bharani running out of Main Gate
as he was not let in and later learned that even Ram,Karthik and
Senthilanand were also not allowed to enter. After seeing Bharani, KK
was reluctant to enter and I insisted to get in. KK, Aparna and myself
tried our luck and no one cared to stop us as the security guys were
busy checking a Tavera.

As soon as we entered, Aparna felt good by the change in the
environment and also our guest had chance to spot the beautiful
spotted Deers. We soon hit the Gajendra Circle and took right turn and
started running back. We had done almost 9 kms by then and never felt
thirsty and only then I realised, I was wearing fuel belt and offered
water to Aparna and KK. To be frank after this I wanted a walk break
but Aparna was just running and running and had to just run. We came
out of IIT and ran through the same route and by the time we reached
the Kotturpuram Bridge, my right thigh muscles were getting mild
cramps and I started walking asking KK and Aparna to go ahead.

I took a shorter route to reach the start point and found Ram giving
instructions to Karthik and Senthilanand for yoga postures. Few
minutes later KK and Aparna had arrived and Aparna was surprised to
see me as she knew I was left behind. I shared an incident from movie
3 Idiots which meant to Win a race either you have to be the fastest
or kill the competition. I did the later by taking a shorter route!!!!

When I checked my Garmin it read 13.42 kms, KK and Aparna would
have done atleast 1k extra and Ram,Karthik and Senthilanand did around
11.5 k. Bharani was doing his 30k in preparation for his maiden full
marathon at Auroville. @ Bharani: Hope you had a good run.

Then followed the stretching session coupled with Q&A session by
Ram about the Republic Day. Q&A session was really informative and no
one had answers for questions except for a couple of questions. Thanks
Ram for the information.

We dispersed wishing each other Happy Republic Day.
